Aug 2020 I set out to make a movie. I used the 48 Hour Film Project concept, where certain aspects of the story were pulled at random. I told everyone I was going to do it. I asked people to participate. I shot a video of drawing the topics. I wrote it and then…. Nothing. Right before I was about to film, I had this moment where I realized this was not going to turn out the way I wanted. We were in the middle of the pandemic and I was about to attempt to do this all on my own. While it would be challenging it wouldn’t be the first time, but I felt like I was ready to challenge myself in different ways.
I want to stop using the phrase “good enough for a 48.” I don’t know if other 48 Hour Filmmakers use it, but I have probably said it on everyone I’ve done.
Honestly, I’ll probably continue to say it. When you attempt to make a film in a 48-hour time frame things are just gonna have to be “good enough.”
But that doesn’t apply here. This isn’t a competition, the only deadline is the one I create. So I decided to hold off on making it and waited for things to open up again. In that time I focused on how to become a better filmmaker. I’ve read dozens of screenplays, I learned how to properly format a script, I’ve watched documentaries on film, I follow a handful of YouTube channels about filmmaking. I’ve immersed myself in this is what I’m trying to say.
So now I’m ready to apply all this newfound knowledge to my craft. I’m ready to start work on my next film. Do I expect to be the next Tarantino? No, that’s ridiculous. But I do expect to be a better filmmaker than I was in my previous film.
